Full Product Description

The Higonokami knife is a traditional and historic Japanese friction folding pocket knife that first appeared over 130 years ago in 1896. After the Samurai class was abolished in the late 1800s there was no longer a demand for swordsmiths to make their famous Katana swords. The highly skilled blacksmiths had to find other products to make and so the Higonokami knife was born.

The blade of the Higonokami has that signature katana shape and is forged in the same way by laminating two different steels together. A softer mild steel is forge welded around a Premium Aogami No. 2 Blue Paper Tool steel cutting core. This two metal technique that was used in Katana and still used today in high quality knives and chisels, allows the tool to have an extremely hard and sharp cutting edge, but the overall tool remains strong.

It gained extreme popularity in Japan’s working-class and was even carried by school children for sharpening pencils. It has since become an iconic and protected Japanese product. Temple Tool Company is proud to partner with the historic fifth-generation Nagao Kanekoma makers of Higonokami to create our own signature branded version of this timeless knife.
