A “wakizashi” is the shorter of the two swords traditionally worn by samurai, the katana being the full length sword. While the katana was often set aside indoors or in certain formal settings, the wakizashi remained close at hand, tucked into the wearer’s belt. This chisel takes its name from that tradition: like the short sword, it is designed to be carried by the craftsman and kept readily available whenever needed.

This premium chisel was forged by renowned Japanese blacksmith Akio Tasai using Special Blue Paper “aogami” steel, laminated to “mokume”  (wood-grain pattern) Damascus. The back features a double-hollow grind, and the bevel is set at approximately 30 degrees. The chisel is fitted with a beautiful rosewood handle, with the hoop preset and the handle end properly mushroomed. It also includes a custom leather sheath, allowing the chisel to be securely worn at the waist. Slightly longer and more robust than a standard oire nomi bench chisel, it is especially well suited for chopping and heavy joinery work. Hand made in Japan.
